ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Honorius’ early education in Constantinople; the usurpation of Eugenius; Honorius’ accession as co-Augustus in 393; Theodosius’ joint triumph with Honorius in Milan after Eugenius’ defeat; and his father’s unexpected death. This personal tragedy profoundly affected Honorius. His father’s right-hand man, Stilicho, claimed guardianship of the young emperor. At Theodosius’ funeral in Milan, Bishop Ambrose gave a poignant eulogy which established a Christian moral code for the impressionable young emperor to follow.
