ABSTRACT

This chapter deals exclusively with the North African Gildonic War, 397–8. Honorius sent an army to North Africa to suppress a rebellion led by the comes Africae Gildo. Stilicho did not lead the African expedition. He sent a proxy instead, and stayed with Honorius in Italy to ensure his influence over the thirteen-year-old emperor remained undiminished. The Gildonic War was the first of a series of internal conflicts which marred Honorius’ reign.
