ABSTRACT

In art and literature, Honorius is represented as the ideal Catholic Christian ruler. Like his father, Theodosius I, Honorius actively implemented stringent policies against heretics and pagans. He built new churches and embellished existing ones in Rome and Ravenna, many of which were dedicated to the Theodosian family’s patron saints. Honorius gave greater powers to bishops, and played a role in Roman papal elections, as did his sister Placidia.
