ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some key events from Honorius’ last years, c. 414–23. Details of the emperor’s life in this period are extremely obscure. A peace deal was reached between Rome and the Visigoths, who received land in Gaul; Placidia returned home, married Constantius, and had two children. Almost as soon as the civil wars that had plagued the West for so long ended, Honorius died and was buried in Rome. A short appraisal of his life and achievements conclude this chapter.
