ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses various key barriers to effective animal protection from disasters. It considers how animals have a huge role to play in disaster and how this creates powerful arguments for greater attention of the plight of animals in disaster. Disasters are economic events. They damage people, the things that people have accumulated or use to protect themselves and the items that they use to generate income. The role that animal products play in human nutrition is well known and the science well developed. When we consider the human-animal bond post disaster, it has been proven that animals often help people deal with the loss of life. The chapter shows the value of animals to people and why there should be an imperative to help animals within the humanitarian contexts. Without a focus on animal welfare in disasters, any gains made by the animal welfare sector in the medium term could be threatened by the onset of climate change.
