ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on concepts through the use of case studies on specific disaster events that offer possible solutions for sustainable futures at the local level. It comments upon the changes at national and international level to ensure the well-being of animals in disaster. The chapter analyses the array of possible scenarios in the future, the role of animal professionals and the way to provide for adaptive solutions and influence them for a better world for animals. The issue of animal welfare in a disaster hides in plain sight; it is obvious when it is explained but isn't readily apparent to everyone until then. Academia has an important role to play in opening this issue up and improving the visibility of its importance. Gradually, in urban centres planners are beginning to see the challenges that ignoring animal welfare in planning and emergency response will bring when disaster strikes.
