ABSTRACT

Rather than getting stuck on timescales for intervening to help with recovery, this chapter focuses on the principles of recovery as they relate to animals. There are two kinds of closely intertwined forms of recovery in the farm animal equation. The first is the recovery and continuity of the farm animal business, and the second is the recovery of the animal's health and welfare. Rehabilitation and reconstruction are the main tasks during the recovery process, starting immediately after the rescue efforts; beginning when the emergency ends. Government at all levels and the media can play a meaningful role during and right after a disaster strikes, to avoid secondary impacts on surviving animals, specially pets. Critical to improving animals' resiliency is an understanding of how factors beyond their well-being might affect their vulnerability. Factors could include: how the climate interacts with breeds; how the geography of the area creates vulnerabilities; and how the local populous creates risks in times of crisis.
