ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the key professions and roles involved in disaster management for animals and covers the key themes to consider for professions. It focuses on those professions normally be involved and offering advice on how they can work both as an individual and together to ensure the most effective approach for animals. These professionals should be and will be the quintessential reference points for animal owners to learn about animal risk management and about how to protect their own animals. National governments need to enforce pre-existing policies to protect animals from disasters, control and protect the markets from racketeering and provide the necessary emergency elements to help animal owners save their livelihoods by saving their animals. Emergency planners have critical role prior to disasters in considering the impact of potential animal issues and developing capacity to cope with this issue. International organisations such as UN institutions currently play a key role in all stages of the disaster cycle.
