ABSTRACT

Good in the widest sense, includes intrinsic and instrumental goods; and moral goodness is one of those that are intrinsic. Some extent regarding it as instrumental; whereas, when people are thinking of the man himself, the value or worth that they ascribe to him appears to be intrinsic. In science and philosophy people have to observe the conditions of truth; in art, the conditions of beauty. In more mechanical work, the conditions of the material that they use, in politics and the more ordinary occupations of life, the conditions and special circumstances of human life. To calculate the value of different qualities, it would be necessary to find some way of reducing qualities to quantities. Power of some sort has thus to be recognized as an aspect of goodness; and hence it has sometimes been maintained that Power should be regarded as one of the intrinsic values.
