ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses why independent learning is so important and how it aids revision. It examines how to flag up independent learning skills whilst teaching in the classroom. The chapter uses information and communication technology (ICT) and social networking for revision. Teaching and learning in the classroom is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to getting students through their General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) and A Levels. Students should be given directed tasks at least once a week in order to make homework a habit. By directing what they should do teachers are initially scaffolding their learning at home or elsewhere by setting specific readings, written requirements and timings. To help students plan their independent study or revision, teachers use unit booklets with recommended reading lists and audit tools for analysing students' strengths and weaknesses. A way to combine student's love of all things technological is to use social networking websites/apps.
