ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on some simple starters and their use for checking knowledge and understanding. It uses games in sociology for checking knowledge, understanding and even getting students to analyse and evaluate. The chapter examines how questioning can check more than knowledge and be applied to higher order thinking skills. It also explores the different uses of card sorts and how they can develop different skills. The chapter also discusses how group work can develop both sociological skills and learning skills. It then uses role plays and drama to further students' sociological thinking skills. The chapter explores how to scaffold and support students' essay writing skills. There are all sorts of games teachers can use for checking the basic skills of knowledge and understanding. They can be used as starters, breathers from more serious activities or even plenaries. These activities can include: guess the sociologist, guess the key word, definition bingo, keyword relay races, and walkabout bingo.
