ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 begins by examining how the family functions as a primary social group and a social institution. It then explores the definitions of family and forms of family based on structure, kinship, descent, authority, and residence. It also explores trends in family forms. Marriage is a universal social institution that forms a family. The second part of the chapter focuses on forms of marriage. The text uses the diversity and global approach to help students understand a diverse society in the United States and world families around the globe.
