ABSTRACT

Regrettably, there are many family stressors and crises that can potentially threaten or disrupt family functioning. This chapter explores the multiple types, effects, and risks associated with intimate partner violence, child abuse and neglect, sibling abuse, and elder abuse and neglect as well as theories and strategies addressing their occurrence and prevention. A similar light is shed on the crisis of alcohol and drug abuse, and the topics of mental illness, suicide, and eating disorders in families also are discussed. From diversity and global perspectives, the chapter explores the roles of gender and cultural norms in the fostering of assault and violence.
