ABSTRACT

This chapter helps the readers to understand the information contained in documentation for in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. The learning outcome is designed to test our knowledge of the various laws and documents relating to electrical equipment maintenance. There are a number of areas within the IET Code of Practice that provide information relating to the learning outcome. The IET Code of Practice lists and gives some information on the key statutory documents relating to portable appliance testing and expands on areas such as scope and maintenance. The chapter presents assessment criteria of portable appliance testing: explaining the purpose of in-service inspection and testing documentation, specifying actions to be taken with damaged or faulty equipment and stating why records should be kept throughout the lifetime of the equipment. The memorandum of guidance on the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 recommends that records of maintenance including tests should be kept throughout the working life of equipment.
