ABSTRACT

A couple of months ago someone asked me when was the last time I was called nigger. I bristle even saying the word. But as it happens, it was a few summers ago and, in of all places, Africa— and as you can imagine, it came as quite a shock. I was in Kigali, Rwanda, a city known for its luscious rolling hills, pristine sidewalks and of course genocide…Another word that elicits a strong visceral response when spoken aloud.
