ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is about the relationship between masculine cultures, gender embodiment and inequality at work. It is also about different forms of structural power and, at times, the abuse of power. The book looks at the continuing problem of sexism at work in the creative field and in the new tech industry. It examines women's experiences of their own professional networks. The book also illustrates the problems for perceived or real "non-normative" or non-heterosexual women, whose "lesbian" or "asexual" presence symbolizes bodies outside the heteronormative frame. It introduces the profile of the two industries, such as their geographical location, size, internal structures and organizational hierarchies. The book establishes the factors that contribute too many of the barriers that affect women at work, as well as illustrating how workplace inequality among the highly-skilled is tied to hegemonic masculinities.
