ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of certain job functions in each industry, and the position of women and men in these functions. This information is important for analyzing how gender is used by employers to structure highly-skilled white-collar jobs and ideal employees, a foundation for mechanisms of inequality. The chapter is fundamental to understanding the mechanisms, homogeneity, homosociability and heterosexuality, which are used to construct gender inequality. It examines the gendered positioning of women and men in advertising and computing, it is necessary to provide a brief overview of the work environment of the women and men interviewed. Descriptions of time periods, revenues, locations, demographics and job functions are useful in understanding each industry's culture. Research has found that women working in IT companies were more likely to be removed from the more technological or masculine aspects of work, working in design rather than coding, the former being a less technical area.
