ABSTRACT

This chapter lays out the details of the concept of socially sustainable business systems. The goals of SSBS are explored in detail. There is a discussion of the goals for people that will assure human rights and needs for all. The discussion of the planetary goals focuses on the importance of the planet for the people inhabiting the planet, but also the planet itself and the millions of species that share the Earth. The discussion of profit presents the biggest difference between SSBS and the current concepts of sustainability with an explanation that profit itself is not an end goal, but instead an independent variable that is meant to serve the people and planet goals. This chapter concludes by discussing the processes needed to move from DAC towards SSBS and with a call for students to begin to consider their roles in this process.
