Given the economic crisis of the past few years, there's no better place than the courthouse, particularly bankruptcy court, to find great business stories. Litigation as a business tactic and as a way to redress a wrong committed by a company is on the increase; therefore, having an understanding of how the court system is used in the business world is vital to any reporter. Business lawsuits may disclose to the world the first glimpse into a major business conflict or a company's struggles. In some corporate lawsuits, a business may ask for a judge to issue a temporary restraining order preventing another company from taking some action that may hurt the business. The number of employee discrimination lawsuits filed in federal courts in the year ended Sept. 30, 2014, totaled 11,937, according to a US Department of Justice study. Personal bankruptcies can also be important sources of information for other stories, particularly stories about companies.
