ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the many different extant answers to basic question of what makes great teaching and the related though distinct question of what makes a great teacher. The some basic questions are: Is great teaching identified by outstanding student course evaluations; Is being a great teacher innate or a set of behaviors and characteristics that can be learned. The chapter discusses the common approaches to examining these questions and review some characteristics attained to date. It describes a teaching hierarchy, focusing on the pinnacle in the author's view, the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). One of the most prestigious teaching awards in the United States is the Council for Advancement and Support of Education's (CASEs) Professor of the Year program. Not surprisingly, a teacher's rating on Teacher Behaviour Checklist (TBC) is associated with the author's Model Teaching Criteria (MTC). Specifically, self-reports on both measures share statistically meaningful correlations.
