ABSTRACT

This chapter explores different forms of training starting with a discussion of how teachers need to maintain expert knowledge in a subject area, acquire knowledge about basic pedagogical theory and practice, and maintain current knowledge of pedagogical theory and practice. It discusses that how students learn. The chapter reviews some of the key components of teacher training. Teaching is both an art and a craft. Parini explores the "art" aspect of this duality and Brookfield, Palmer, and Weimer provide thoughtful explorations of some of the more abstract elements of teaching that do not lend themselves to being trained. Model teachers possess pedagogical knowledge that goes beyond specific teaching techniques. Many different factors linked to learning and general academic performance in college. Numerous factors such as achievement motivation, goals, social involvement, and perceived social support are associated with students' academic performance.
