ABSTRACT

Thousands of studies have been conducted on assessing the efficacy of instructional methods in higher education. Great attention and debate has been given to this issue and to this point specifically: there is no agreement as to what constitutes the best instructional method. Model teachers embrace varied pedagogical approaches that focus on engaging students in the learning process. Moreover, several meta-analyses and reviews suggest that active learning, collaborative learning, and problem-based learning are effective instructional methods. The role of teachers is that of an expert facilitator; they create learning opportunities and assist students in the understanding, integration, evaluation, and synthesis of material. Teachers assist in student learning by scaffolding, asking questions, and providing models and exemplars of solutions to similar problems. Model teachers are professional and have strong communication skills. In addition to course policies on academic dishonesty, ethical teachers demonstrate academic integrity by developing objective and fair assessments.
