ABSTRACT

Despite the diversity of disciplines, model teachers of all backgrounds and teaching specialties infuse some broad educational themes. This chapter explores this characteristic and issues surrounding content. It discusses how teachers need to establish learning objectives that both reflect core elements of their discipline, including some of the breadth of disciplinary theories and applications, and broader liberal education outcomes. It highlights the importance of covering the basic elements of a liberal education. Together with guidelines for the institutional environment, faculty and staff, infrastructure, student mentoring, student development, and more, the document includes an outline of the chemistry curriculum. Correspondingly, many disciplines draw attention to the need to educate students about cultural diversity. Model teachers foster liberal arts skills in their courses; they also establish content related to ethics and diversity. The chapter presents a case study of Assistant Professor of Hubris, Jamie who was excited about his new job.
