ABSTRACT

This chapter defines adolescence and provides an overview of ecological systems and a strength-based approach for conceptualizing adolescent development. Adolescent development and coping are influenced by biological, social, cultural, and historical influences. Culturally diverse youth face intersecting systems of oppression that impact their experiences during adolescence, and ethnic-racial socialization is an important process during this time. We also discuss the marginalized status of young people, based on adultism. Stress is inevitable and can be growth promoting, but toxic levels of stress and maladaptive coping contribute to troubled adolescent behavior. The chapter includes a vignette, reflective questions, suggestions for working with adolescents, and supplemental resources to promote critical thinking and multicultural competence.
