ABSTRACT

Depression and anxiety symptoms are two of the most common mental health concerns among adolescents. Depression and anxiety disorders often co-occur, and they are associated with impaired development and a higher risk for suicidal ideation. Social and cultural factors impact how adolescents express their internal distress. We review diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Information is provided about prevalence, clinical course, and etiology. Prevention and treatment strategies target emotions, cognitions, behaviors, and interpersonal relationships. The chapter concludes with suggestions for working with adolescents experiencing depression and/or anxiety. The chapter also includes a vignette, reflective questions, and supplemental resources to promote critical thinking and multicultural competence.
