ABSTRACT

Dear Mr Blunt. Mr Dench has been here & reported on “Newbuildings” the house, bringing me the results of his plumbings, of the vertical on the outside, &c. He also – according to my wish – found creeping room way according to my wish into the roof over the attic ceiling. The plumbings are declare much as I supposed they wd be, namely, that the attached chief chimney bulk, on the S.S.E, gives in its height from plinth to stone weather courses an inclination outwards of but "1¾, but the much shorter height of the upper b[ric]k w[or]k of chimney gives another "1¾ of outward leaning. This also is what I as expected; and as this work latter is attached to the gable end work which has suffered from considerable movement, the conclusion seems clear that the cause of dislocation has chiefl y come from defects or decay in some of the main timbers in the roof timbers, and In this Dench agrees with me.
