ABSTRACT
This chapter offers four strategies to accomplish the ground work and close-up work. These are: Rethinking headings, Working with paragraphs, Nominalising text and Balancing active and passive voice. The chapter discusses Tracy Skelton's Geography thesis reporting on a study conducted in Montserrat in the Caribbean. It focuses on the analysis of the gendered nature of employment in Monserrat. Much academic writing is characterised by the use of the passive voice. The passive voice converts the object of the action into the subject of the sentence. DR conference abstract successive government presentations and legitimations of the academies policy were captured through a systematic analysis of policy document, speeches and government collated evidence dating back to the birth of the policy. A critical policy analysis approach was used to draw out and problematise the two core aims of the policy and to highlight shortcomings in the academies evidence base.
