ABSTRACT

In this chapter I will discuss how we best evaluate the political consequences of the changes of ruling parties in 2008 and 2016. To what extent have we seen continuity or change? Will historians view these as successful or failed administrations? How could the Ma Ying-jeou administration come to power with such landslide victories but end up leading the Kuomintang party into historic defeats? I will also look at a number of election campaigns from the post 2008 period and how we can explain the outcome of these contests.
