ABSTRACT

The illustrations that follow are not definitive lesson plans! Division problems could be tackled immediately, an instant start, by implementing a

procedure. However, this requires specific skills, predominantly based on memory. It may not require any understanding. As soon as one brings in understanding and more flexible approaches, for example, estimating, then the student will require other pre-requisite skills such as number sense and operations sense. This creates an impression in the learner that more time will be needed to reach the goal of an answer and that even more time will be needed to check the answer. Some learners will avoid such extra commitment even though it will create a skill that will be far more securely fixed in memory.
