ABSTRACT

Carrying out a study that uses literature review methodology is a very valuable way of collating the existing knowledge in a field of practice, as it enables what is, and is not, known about a subject to be clarified. However, for a literature review to make a useful and meaningful contribution to the evidence base it must be conducted systematically, rigorously and without bias. The methods used in a study that uses literature review methodology essentially detail the process of searching for, appraising and synthesizing the evidence on the subject in question. The report from a study that uses literature review methodology should present conclusions that are firmly grounded in the review's findings, and address its question and aims. Carrying out a study that uses literature review methodology can, therefore, be a valuable contribution to knowledge. However, the worth of a literature review, like any other form of research, is dependent on its quality.
