ABSTRACT
1914 an annus mirabilis for Joyce: he completed the Portrait, saw Dubliners finally published, began Ulysses and wrote his play Exiles. When the Great War broke out, Joyce took his family from Trieste to neutral Switzerland, and they lived in Zurich until 1919.
