ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)-I framework for clinicians working to address and treat the disorders of sleep in individuals with a psychotic illness. It outlines the theory, evidence, and a detailed description of CBT-I for use in the context of psychotic disorders. The book presents a strong argument that clinically meaningful gains can be made with a CBT-I approach for individuals with psychosis. It describes psychotic disorders and Insomnia and provides a rationale for, and a description of, CBT-I and its psychosis-specific adaptations. The book also outlines a brief orientation to both psychotic disorders and Insomnia, and the bidirectional influence that these have on each other. It also describes the theoretical orientation of CBT as a treatment approach for Insomnia.
