ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the effects of substance use on sleep and daytime energy. In most cases, consideration of the costs and benefits of current use patterns is an important motivational tool. The great majority of people with a diagnosis of a psychotic disorder take psychotropic medications. Sometimes, medications can have side effects that impact on sleep without the client realising these are due to their medications. The presence of psychosis and comorbid conditions can result in clients’ lives becoming ‘illness-centric’. A large part of life for many clients involves attending health and medical appointments, worrying about symptoms, taking medications, and coping with side effects. Many people who experience mental illness take prescribed medications, such as antipsychotics and antidepressants. Although caffeine and smoking may be enjoyable and help increase alertness in the daytime, it is unhelpful to drink caffeine or smoke during the evening.
