ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses treatment options for Insomnia, focusing primarily on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)-I. It describes the importance of treating Insomnia and sleep disturbances in their own right, followed by a brief discussion regarding pharmacological treatment options. The chapter provides a review of CBT-I research outcomes and describe typical CBT-I components. It outlines the main adaptations to CBT-I in the context of psychosis. Psychoeducation is a crucial element of CBT-I, because it both sets the stage for CBT-I components, but is also a powerful tool for cognitive change in itself. Providing psychoeducation about sleep need, sleep regulation, and ways to manage poor sleep is an important tool for encouraging changes in sleep. Education is only part of the solution when it comes to establishing good sleep hygiene. People with Insomnia often cope with poor sleep by increasing time spent in bed.
