ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines how festivals may be planned and managed with a better understanding of the processes that contribute to the positive outcomes and how, perhaps, to address those times when the goals of the festival are not achieved. It shows that festivals are an important part of our communities. Our modern lives make us more globalised than ever, but, at the same time, this highlights the importance of the local, and of our communities, however they might be defined. The book presents several case studies to demonstrate the various aspects of the festival encounter, and shows how local authorities and other stakeholders have sought to use festivals to address particular objectives. An issue of great significance for generating positive social outcomes of festivals is the notion of inclusion/exclusion.
