ABSTRACT

This chapter provides valuable advice and resources for teachers, TAs and SENCOs supporting pupils on the dyslexic spectrum. This practical resource will help those who are looking for expert guidance and strategies, as well as providing a professional development tool which will encourage outstanding practice at all levels. Where a teacher has concerns that a pupil may be on the dyslexic spectrum, the SENCO should collect information to compile a Pupil Profile form. Pupils with dyslexia have difficulties with automatic recall of phonemegrapheme associations. Many pupils with dyslexia have great difficulty in recalling Common Exception Word (CEW). Teachers know that pupils with dyslexia struggle with writing in the classroom. It might surprise teachers that the latest research published in May 2015 showed that pupils with dyslexia produced handwriting at the same speed as their peers but paused for longer periods due to poor and hesitant spelling.
