ABSTRACT
This chapter covers designing for the camera, and the specific requirements of filming on stages. Designing for the camera simply means closing one eye. This is what the camera sees. Knowing how to use the stages to the best advantage of the entire shooting company is the mark of a truly experienced and considerate Production Designer. The chapter presents some of the details to be considered when using studio stages. The Greens Department covers everything needed for a set’s garden, gazebo, pool area, park, or outdoor space. The Construction Coordinator is in charge of the carpenters, painters, and labourers. The construction team can efficiently resolve a Director’s last-minute request while the entire shooting company stands by. Construction on location presents its own set of issues; the Production Designer’s job encompasses not only finding locations that will work for the project, but also selecting locations that are safe and relatively practical.
