ABSTRACT

George Gillespie noted how while the sermon 'is to bee Preached, as well to the ungodly and impenitent that they converted the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper is by God instituted. In the north-east, the session of Dyce, Aberdeen Presbytery, stressed that those who failed to resubscribe the Covenant and were 'accessorie to the late unlawfull ingagement' were to be refused access to the Lord's Supper. In October 1648, the Synod of Moray reported that the General Assembly had ordered that 'all Persons at ther first admissione to the Lord's Supper subscrive the Covenant and that they be inquired of at visitaone'. Communion vessels and accoutrements were as vulnerable to rebel forces as the large groups of people entering the church to celebrate the Lord's Supper. The backdrop of warfare and division has prevented the perfect application of Reformed guidance on communion celebrations, but congregations did continue to gather and celebrate Christs last supper.
