ABSTRACT
Teaching in higher education is considered central to social and educational
transformation (e.g. Mezirow 1997), the more so in societies tackling oppression.
Consonant with the needs of a society, continent and world undergoing profound
shifts, the transformation of higher education requires a fundamental shift in values.
The question of where value is placed is pivotal to social and educational trans-
formation, for it is a foundational determinant of whether transformation will occur.
In education systems, the placement of value helps clarify whether transformation
