ABSTRACT

Internationalisation and globalisation are on everyone’s minds these days and, in

certain respects, have inspired educational renewal in universities. Moreover, the

increasing numbers of international students who move from their familiar cultural

environment to participate in educational programmes abroad, currently over six

million annually (Slethaug 2010, 1), bring with them expectations and experiences

that can benefit the receiving educational institutions despite increased complexity in

administration. Nonetheless, there are important questions that institutions, regulators

and individual lecturers need to bring to the forefront. Values, beliefs and practices

need to be clarified institutionally and even nationally to create a mutually fruitful and

genuine conversation. It would be beneficial and uplifting if the situation could be

turned into an opening for reflection for the parties involved.
