FemalecharactersarepresenteverywhereandnowhereinAPortrait oftheArtistasaYoungMan.Theypervadethenovel,yetremain elusive.Theirsensuousfigureshauntthedevelopingconsciousness ofStephenDedalusandprovideafoilagainstwhichhedefines himselfasbothmanandartist.LikeeverythingelseinAPortrait, womenareportrayedalmostexclusivelyfromStephen'spointof view.Seenthroughhiseyesandcoloredbyhispsychological fantasies,theyoftenappearasone-dimensionalprojectionsofa narcissisticimaginationandemergeasforcefulantagonistsinthe novel'sdialecticalstructure.DemonizedbyStephen'schildhood senseofabjection,theystandaspowerfulemblemsofthefleshfrighteningremindersofsexualtemptation,theprocessofgeneration,andtheinevitabilityofbodilydecay.
