ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how we can become more aware of other people's view of the world and how we can alter the approach to make sure we achieve goal or learn when to leave it, walk away and have the conversation at a better time. To do this, we can use something called transactional analysis', which is a psychological theory that is widely used in all sorts of areas from counselling, training and development, leadership and people management. The concept of transactional analysis suggests that when we communicate, we do so via interactions or transactions with each other. Two of these ego states, namely parent, child and adult, break down again so that you end up with five: Critical parent, Nurturing parent, Adult, Rebellious child and Adaptive child. A safety professional was taking a paper to a board with a view to getting them to sign off a major change improvement programme.
