ABSTRACT

If you say ‘health and safety’ to people these days, it conjures up a picture of unnecessary rules and a bunch of clipboard and cagoule-wearing people stopping you doing something – at least that is what the media would have you believe. In this chapter we will look at how this perception has been built up and how, at times, people in the safety profession have not helped themselves. It is only once armed with this knowledge that we can tackle this commonly held belief.
