ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how one can develop an effective strategy and work plan using principles that apply equally to someone working on a single site, in a geographical area or setting the strategic direction for a global organisation. There is one tool, though, that experience shows is versatile yet easy to use and actually comes from the world of marketing. It is called SOSTAC. While focused on developing a marketing strategy, experience shows that it works as well as a framework to develop a safety strategy, just as it does for other business-related activities. The chapter uses two case study to show how it translates into the work of a safety professional: a safety professional has joined a new organisation and has been tasked to develop a new safety strategy for the five years and a safety professional has been tasked with developing a noise reduction strategy in the machine shop of a manufacturing facility.
