ABSTRACT

Training is an important subject. It is the way in which employees learn about how they should do the job, developing new skills and knowledge. In health and safety terms training is a critical cog in the machine and is often a key risk control measure. However, more enlightened organisations and professionals see it as a chance to improve safety culture and performance. This chapter explores the different learning methods available and considers how to develop and deliver outstanding learning solutions that improve safety as well as shows how one can measure their effectiveness. Training is one of four learning methods used to encourage people to change their behaviour and cope better with the situations they find themselves in. The other methods are coaching, mentoring and counselling. The alternative to developing and running safety training programmes in house is to arrange for an external training provider to do it all for people.
