ABSTRACT
This chapter explores play quarters, an initiative of Play London. This initiative co-ordinates clusters of play streets (temporary street closure to facilitate play). The chapter notes the formidable forces that are acting to deter play. It outlines how play streets and quarters have been used to reverse the decline of play on London’s streets and allow that city’s children to enjoy all the benefits that playing offers them and their communities. The chapter concludes that under the right circumstances play quarters can provide conducive circumstances for play to re-colonize streets.
