ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews some of the most important theories related to the concept of crisis that have been developed over the last twenty years. From such work a simple process model of crisis development and recovery is suggested. Selbst (1978) used as a working definition of crisis in an organisational context:

Any action or failure to act that significantly interferes with an (organisation’s) on going functions, the acceptable attainment of its objectives, its viability or survival, or that has a detrimental personal effect as perceived by the majority of its employees, clients or constituents.
