ABSTRACT

The essence of voluntarily accepted risk is that there is a point at which choices can be made to avert, avoid or reduce risk. As individuals we make such choices on the basis of our perceptions of the level of risk. Life is made up of choices that lead to risk taking or risk avoiding behaviour. In social life in advanced societies many risks can be avoided but unexpected and new risks resulting from technological developments have increased the involuntary risks that have to be accepted as part of modern life (Sprent, 1988).
