ABSTRACT

As we have rehearsed in this book at several points defining ‘construction’ is a complex affair as there are many interpretations. Each of these, no doubt add to the complication of managing, securing and understanding sustainable construction. In fact some still find it difficult to imagine sustainable construction as a future for the industry. However, the final extract encourages you to finish the study of this new approach on a positive note. Reading 8 picks up on the distinction between the broad and narrow definitions of construction and addresses the current inability of statistical analyses to capture the full scope and impact of construction on sustainable development. The closing aim, therefore, is to encourage you to think rigorously about what needs to change for the broad ranging journey towards sustainable construction to effectively commence.
