ABSTRACT

George Eliot's review of Maud, and Other Poems (1855) opens the October 'Belles Lettres' section of the Westminster, which was finished, according to her Journal, on 15 September 1855· Her response to the poem was by no means remarkable, for, as Sir Charles Tennyson says, 'Poor Maud was received with almost universal reprobation', and 'the Liberal press was incensed by the poet's political attitude'. 1
